About
Gnarly Enterprise and Societal Challenges
Hello, I’m Martin.
I work on how organisations get things done, and how that needs to change as AI capabilities become available to teams. My day job is org design and operating model advisory for some of the world’s largest enterprises.
The longer-term question I keep coming back to here is what teams, structures, and ways of working actually look like when agentic AI tooling becomes a participant in the work, rather than just a productivity layer for individuals. And how does our society keep up with the pace of change.
I bring my thoughts together here. Field notes from shareable client work, syntheses of practitioner conversations, and occasional longer pieces drawing on the research I’m part of.
What I’m doing
I’m a Principal Consultant at TeamForm, a modern platform for operating and adjusting enterprise workforces taking into account the many dimensions of that problem space: supervisory reporting lines, teaming/matrix/program structures, funding, strategy and the work that delivers it, the impact of AI technologies, role design / job architectures, the list goeson.
My engagements are typically with executive teams navigating delivery transformation, workforce evolution, and AI adoption all at the same time. Selected current and recent work:
- National Australia Bank (2021 to present): primary consultant supporting the executive through launch and evolution of the bank’s domain-based delivery model, across 12,000+ staff in the Commercial and Institutional Bank.
- IDP Education (2025 to present): staff allocation aligned to project financial accounting, and a digital enablement org design initiative.
- Australian Broadcasting Corporation (2022 to present): remote-first digital product teams, team-first planning, and TeamForm as the workforce system of record for Digital Products.
Earlier: Telstra T22 and Digitisation, where I cut my teeth on reconfiguring tens of thousands of personnel into product-aligned delivery.
My LinkedIn profile will be most up to date.
Living AI-enabled ways of working
Alongside client work I prototype features in code and contribute to how the TeamForm product itself evolves. If I’m advising organisations on how they might adapt their work to best leverage AI, then I will also live it.
It might be apt to call myself a Forward Deployed Engineer that gets into gnarly business process challenges.
What I write about
Generally along one of these 3 threads:
1- Org design for the age of AI.
Most organisations have figured out how AI changes individual productivity. Far fewer are working through what happens to the way teams structure, fund, and align themselves once agentic AI tooling is part of the daily work.
2- Operating model evolution.
How delivery models actually adapt over time, what makes them stick, and what makes them fragile. Less theory, more what I see working.
3- Practitioner synthesis.
Conferences, meetups, and research, written up for people who can’t attend everything.
Research
Business Agility Report, with the Business Agility Institute (2018+)
I co-author the Business Agility Institute’s annual Business Agility Report, the global benchmark for how organisations measure and invest in business agility. All eight editions since 2018, drawing on 2,500+ organisations.
I lead the qualitative analysis: methodology, theme identification, and the narrative that ties it together.
The analytical approach has evolved across the editions, from external methodology specialists, to manual coding, to LLM-assisted theme identification with human review.
Global Organization Design Practitioner Report, with the Org Design Forum (2025+)
In March 2026, the Organization Design Forum published its first Global Organization Design Practitioner Report.
I led the qualitative analysis analysis and write up, working from a global survey of practitioners across in-house, external, and academic roles. The report mapped where the field is today and where it’s heading.
One finding in particular sits at the heart of why this site exists: AI is widely used in day-to-day OD work, but rarely embedded into operating model design itself. That gap is what I’m working on closing.
Community
I co-host the Melbourne Business Agility Meetup on meetup.com and LinkedIn.
I collaborate with:
- Sooner Safer Happier meetup and company. I’m an Advocate for their mission to enable organisations to achieve better outcomes for all and a more humane world of work.
- Melbourne Agile PM Meetup
- Australian Organisation Design Forum
The synthesis posts here often start as notes from those sessions.
The rest of my time is taken up being a father of two teens, helping the Altona Life Saving Club with beach water safety patrols in the summer, and rowing surf boats whereever I can get a seat :)
Background
Engineering by training (B.Eng.Soc. McMaster, M.Sc. Computer Science RMIT) and a decade in telco and networking before TeamForm. The systems-thinking habit is hard to shake, and turns out to be useful.
